How to be Empathetic
By: Ashley and Cilicia
The power of empathy. Is it really that powerful? Some studies have shown that empathy can not only improve the lives of others but yours as well. By being more empathetic, you can learn to be more resilient and overcome challenges more smoothly. Here are some tips on how to be more supportive of those around you!
- You’ve probably heard this time and time again, but put yourself in their shoes. Take a second to understand the whole story and think about all the factors that could be influencing them. By actually thinking from their perspective, you can help in a more effective manner.
- Acknowledge their feelings and respond with care.
- Don’t brush off their emotions, let them know that their feelings are valid.
- Actively listen to what they have to say. Listen to listen, not to reply.
- Tell them that they have your support.
- Encourage them to share their experience by asking questions.
- Make sure you give them time to think and respond to you.
- Let them know that it is okay if they don’t feel comfortable sharing yet.
- It is important to know your boundaries. Make sure you don’t take on more than you can handle mentally and emotionally. If you take on too much, you are more likely to struggle mentally and emotionally. Additionally, you might not be very helpful to the person you’re empathizing with because you may not have the capacity to create a strong support system.
