How to Protect Your Mask

By: Ashley and Cilicia

Having reusable/non-medical face masks are a lot more practical when it comes to staying safe.  It saves you money in the long run, it’s just as protective as a medical mask for day-to-day activities, and it’s much better for the environment.

Properly caring for your masks is crucial to stay healthy and reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Below are the dos and the don’ts when handling your face masks.

  • Clean your hands thoroughly before and after you touch your mask
  • Fix the adjustable straps and nosepiece so that the mask covers your nose, mouth, and chin without leaving gaps on the side
  • Avoid touching your mask while you are wearing it
  • Hold the mask by the straps when you are taking it off or putting it on
  • Once the mask is off, store it in a carrying case

Storing masks away in carrying cases is important to keeping masks as effective as they can be.  The case should be breathable, such as textile cases or a paper bag.  Plastic bags are not recommended as they can create condensation and promote bacterial growth.

Carrying cases protect masks from any physical damage from things like water or soil.  They also save belongings from being contaminated with any germs that may be on the mask.  But the biggest benefit is that they protect masks from coming into contact with other bacteria when not in use and prevent any bacteria that may be on the mask from growing.

With practicality, and style in mind it may be difficult to find a case that has the visual appeal while still being dependable. Carrying cases can easily be found on stores like Etsy, Amazon, and some facemask companies, but they don’t always check all the boxes – safe, convenient, and stylish.  However, the Pause and Breathe carrying cases check all the boxes.  Pause and Breathe has a variety of prints and patterns available, but most importantly their case has double sided pockets that can carry spare masks or other accessories without worrying about cross contamination.  They also come with a carabiner, making for easy transportation from key chains to backpacks,  handbags, or purses.
